Natural vs Lab Diamonds. Our position.

A natural diamond and a laboratory-grown one are, chemically, the same stone. Both are crystalline carbon. Both refract light by the same law. Under a loupe, only a trained gemologist can tell them apart, and even then only with instruments.

What separates them is not what they are, but how they came to be.

The stone of time

A natural diamond formed under heat and pressure for one to three billion years before it reached the surface of the earth. It is, in the most literal sense, a fragment of geological time. Buying one is buying something that pre-exists every human story.

The argument for natural is the argument for rarity, for permanence, and for tradition. It is also, quietly, the argument for resale value. The secondary market for natural diamonds is older and deeper.

The stone of intention

A laboratory-grown diamond forms over a few weeks in a chamber designed to replicate the conditions of the earth's mantle. It uses far less land and water than mining. It is younger. It is cheaper. It is, in most consumer-relevant respects, identical.

The argument for lab is the argument for ethics, for environmental care, and for getting more brilliance per krona spent. It is also a decision about what part of the story matters most: the geology, or the moment.

What is a lab-grown diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond, created in a controlled laboratory that recreates conditions resembling those far below ground. It has the same chemical composition and crystal structure as a natural diamond, which is why the two cannot be told apart by eye.

The controlled process also makes it possible to reach a high and consistent quality in colour and clarity.

Common questions

Not with the naked eye. They share the same chemical composition and crystal structure, so their optical and physical properties are near identical. Telling them apart takes gemmological equipment that can identify how the diamond formed. A certificate from an established laboratory will also state which it is.

Yes. They are diamonds, not imitations: crystallised carbon with the same fundamental chemical and physical properties as natural stones. It is more accurate to see a lab-grown diamond as an alternative to a natural one than as a copy of it.

Mainly because they can be produced in controlled environments rather than being limited by what the earth happens to hold, and because production keeps getting more efficient. The rest is rarity and market: natural diamonds are a finite resource with an older, deeper resale market, while lab-grown stones can be made in quantity.

A ring is the most personal of objects. The decision should belong to the person wearing it.
