Choosing the band that lives next to it.

Same metal, same finish. A platinum solitaire paired with a platinum band. A yellow gold engagement ring with a yellow gold band. The cleanest, quietest pairing, and the one most clients eventually choose. It reads as a single piece rather than two.

A contoured or fitted band, shaped to nest precisely under the engagement ring's profile so there is no daylight between them. The result lies flat on the finger and rotates as one piece. The trade-off is that a fitted band only pairs with the ring it was made for.

A plain band is comfort-fit, smooth, and reads timeless. A pavé or eternity band catches light along its full length and matches the brilliance of the engagement diamond. The classic pairing is a plain band with a diamond engagement ring, which lets the centre stone do the work. A pavé band with a simple solitaire creates a more confident, contemporary expression.

The engagement ring shank we use is 1.8mm. Most matching bands come in 1.8mm or 2.0mm. A slightly wider band, around 2.2mm, reads as more substantial and is the more traditional pairing.

Rings that feel perfect on their own can behave differently together. When two bands sit close, the contact area and the pressure around the finger both change, so a pairing should not be judged in front of a mirror alone.

Close your hand lightly. Bend the finger. Leave them on a while and watch how they move as the hand is used. A stack should rest against the finger without tightening or twisting. A low profile is usually an advantage day to day, especially if the hands work.

You can do either. Many clients commission both pieces at the same time, which lets us match the metal lot, finish, and shank profile to the millimetre. Others wait until closer to the wedding, especially if the engagement ring is a surprise.

If you commission later, bring or send us the engagement ring before we begin the band. Different production batches can result in subtle variations in tone, particularly with yellow gold.

Most people wear the wedding band innermost, closest to the hand, with the engagement ring above it. That is the classic order and it gives a calm base: the band becomes the foundation and the engagement ring the natural focus.

But no rule says it has to be worn that way. What matters is how the settings, profiles and stones work together, so try them in movement rather than standing still. A high setting may need more air. A slim contour band can follow the setting and make the flow softer.

The two rings need not be the end of the story. They can become the core of a stack that grows with a life: a thin diamond band on an anniversary, a new ring to mark an occasion, an inherited ring set beside something new.

Keep a clear centre. The engagement ring and the wedding band should still read as the heart of it, with anything added supporting rather than competing.

Two rings worn tightly together affect each other over time. Friction can change the finish and leave faint marks in the metal, particularly where different materials meet. That is not a reason to avoid contrasting metals, only worth knowing.

Wipe them with a soft cloth after wear, store them separately, and take them off for heavy work or training. Have the fit and the settings checked periodically.
